CITATION INTEGRITY & COPYRIGHT PROTECTION

Attribution without reproduction

MetLibrary catalogs source documents with precise bibliographic metadata and builds properly formatted academic citations — without ever copying, quoting, or displaying copyrighted content. Every response is traceable. No source text is reproduced.

What gets cataloged

Metadata in, citations out — never the document itself

When a source document enters MetLibrary, it is not stored as readable text that can be copied or quoted. Instead, the system records structured bibliographic metadata — the same kind of information you would find on a library catalog card or in a journal’s reference list.

These fields are curated by hand, validated against data-quality rules, and never auto-generated or guessed. If a value is unknown, the field is left blank — rendering as “(n.d.)” in the citation — rather than fabricated.

This is the only information about a source document that ever appears in a MetTutor response. The underlying document content is used by the AI to understand concepts, but it is never reproduced as text in the output.

Catalog field What it records Example
Author Who wrote or published the document Thompson, A. & Taylor, B. N.
Year When this edition was published 2008
Title The full proper name of the work Guide for the Use of the International System of Units (SI)
Document number The official standard identifier NIST SP 811
Publisher The organization that issued the document National Institute of Standards and Technology
Link / DOI A stable retrieval link, when available https://doi.org/10.6028/…

How citations are built — from catalog fields, not from source text

Every time MetTutor references a source, it assembles a proper academic citation from the catalog metadata fields — not from the document’s actual content.

The citation follows APA 7th Edition format, the same standard used in scientific journals, university research, and technical publications. This means every MetTutor reference is formatted exactly as it would appear in a peer-reviewed paper or accreditation document.

The system uses a curated-first approach: hand-verified metadata for each document is always preferred over automated lookups. When a field is missing, the formatter degrades gracefully — a missing year renders as “(n.d.)”, a missing author falls back to the publishing body — rather than guessing or fabricating.

Copyright protection
How MetLibrary protects copyrighted content

Copyright protection is a core architectural principle of the MetLibrary — not an afterthought. The system is designed so that copyrighted source material cannot be quoted, excerpted, or reproduced in any MetTutor output.

PRINCIPLE 01 — NO QUOTING

MetTutor never quotes, excerpts, or reproduces copyrighted text

The AI reads source material to learn concepts and understand requirements — but its responses are original explanations grounded on those concepts, not copied passages. No sentence, paragraph, or clause text from a copyrighted document ever appears in a MetTutor response.

PRINCIPLE 02 — ATTRIBUTION, NOT REPRODUCTION

Formal citations point users to the original work

When MetTutor references a source, it provides a formal APA 7 citation — author, year, title, document number — that directs the user to the original publication. This is the same cite-don’t-copy principle used in academic publishing and scientific research.

PRINCIPLE 03 — METADATA ONLY IN OUTPUT

Only catalog-level information appears in responses

The only source information that surfaces in a user’s response is bibliographic metadata: author name, publication year, document title, and standard number. The underlying document content — the copyrighted text itself — never appears as readable output.

PRINCIPLE 04 — NO DISPLACEMENT

Users still need the original source documents

Because MetTutor teaches concepts rather than reproducing content, it does not displace the original work. Users who need the full text of a standard, procedure, or reference document are directed to the original source via the citation — preserving the commercial and intellectual value of the publication.

PRINCIPLE 05 — TRACEABLE PROVENANCE

Every claim MetTutor makes can be traced to a specific cataloged source

MetTutor uses a two-format citation system that ensures complete traceability without reproducing source material:

  • Documents retrieved from the MetLibrary knowledge base receive numbered [1], [2], [3] markers with full APA citations — built entirely from curated catalog metadata
  • Well-known standards referenced from the AI’s general knowledge use standard academic parenthetical citations — (Thompson & Taylor, 2008, Section 7.6) — with no bracket numbers
  • Both formats direct users to the original publication. Neither format reproduces any copyrighted text from the source document
  • Authors and publishers receive full visibility into how their work is referenced — every citation is a pointer to the original, never a substitute for it

🛡️Protects content

MetLibrary works like a research librarian: it catalogs source documents with precise bibliographic metadata, uses that metadata to build properly formatted academic citations, and directs users to the original works — without ever copying or displaying the copyrighted content itself. This approach respects the intellectual property of authors and publishers while ensuring that every educational response MetTutor delivers is grounded in traceable, authoritative sources.

Every answer cited. No content reproduced.

Launch MetTutor.ai and ask any metrology question. Every response includes a formal citation to its source — so you can verify it yourself against the original document.
